“Writing a poem does not change the world. Learning
about new people, and understanding new people, and
really feeling inspired by people that are different from
you—I would like to say that that’s changing the world.”
Louder Than a Bomb Youth Poetry Tournament takes place in Greensboro NC at UNC-Greensboro April 26, 27, 28th 2013.
High School Team Registration starts: January 1, 2013 and ends March 1, 2013.
The structure of Louder Than a Bomb demands that kids work collaboratively with their peers presenting, critiquing, and rewriting their pieces. To succeed, teams have to create an environment of mutual trust and support. For many kids, being a part of such an environment, in an academic context, is life changing.
Every year, more than six hundred teenagers from over sixty Chicago area schools gather for the world’s largest youth poetry slam, a competition known as "Louder Than a Bomb". Founded in 2001 by the Young Chicago Authors, Louder Than a Bomb is the only event of its kind in the country and is the biggest youth poetry tournament in the U.S.!
Over 7 cities have hosted a Louder Than a Bomb festival and the youth movement is spreading !
The poetry slam and the journey of the participating teenagers was turned into a documentary film by Greg Jacobs & Jon Siskel and focuses on the passion, competition, teamwork, and trust that was gained, lost and found in the youth. It’s about the joy of being young, and the pain of growing up. It’s about speaking out, making noise, and finding your voice.
The Louder Than a Bomb (LTAB) project was designed in response to this need. LTAB exposes high school students and
staff to the world of poetry, literature, and spoken word through creative writing techniques, teamwork, project timelines, and other fundamental critical thinking and social skills. Creative writing, spoken word, and poetry contribute to a students’ skills for the high school, the college classroom, and the working world. LTAB curriculum surpasses the core standards needed for students to pass in the GCS system. While students must prove proficient in specific skills to advance grades, this project and curriculum is designed to go beyond base requirements and provide youth with additional benefits that stem from a diverse cultural experience.
Hosted by Poet.she Female Performing Arts in partnership with City Arts, UNC-Greensboro, and several other art organizations, LTAB NC debuts April 2013. We invite 16 teams from across NC to compete over 3 days for a grand prize. High schools and youth centers will form poetry teams and will rehearse over the next 6-7 months, to prepare for this amazing event.
Students, parents, and community members are encouraged to come and witness this grand event full of writing workshops, entertainment, and spoken word.
